More about Direct Polytechnic Admission (DPA) .

A background information about polytechnic:

Polytechnic provides you with knowledge that can be applied when you join the workforce. The training in the polytechnic makes you more valuable in employers' eyes of prospective, as what you have been taught can add value to what you do and offer solutions to problems that you might encounter next time in the work place.

DPA allows you to obtain a seat in a particular polytechnic before you even sit for your "O" Levels.
If you are accepted by the particular polytechnic, you will then go through a Polytechnic Preparatory Programme which starts next year around February, which is a eight-week course. The PPP gives you a better chance to do better than the peers that apply later when school opens.
PPP can enrich you with the firsthand experience of life from service, adventure learning to improve your language, writing skills to creative computing and IT skills.
DPA is available to all Secondary 4 Express and 5 Normal Academic. To be in order to stay in the polytechnic, you must obtain at least L1R2B2 with a score minimum of 26 points with no fails for English and Mathematics, and meet the minimum entry requirements for the course, one of the relevant subject must be Mathematics. The Language would be English. And other 2 best subject you done well. And another subject that is relevant to the course you are going to take (If i am not wrong) . This excludes CCA!
You will need your examination results and the recommendations by your school teachers, your CCA grades, and other talents will be consider.
This DPA will starts at July, so keep a look out!!

Big News! Big News!

Although this might not concern you now, but it will be the news you will need years later!!

Chile quake moved Earth's axis!

The powerful earthquake that shook Chile on Saturday probably shifted the Earth's axis and made days slightly shorter, a NASA scientist said.

Richard Gross, a research scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, calculated that the planet's axis would have shifted by eight centimeters (three inches) during the 8.8 magnitude quake, NASA said in a statement.

Earth days are 24 hours long because that's the amount of time it takes the planet to make one full rotation on its axis, so shifting the axis would affect rotation.

If, indeed, the planet's axis did shift by eight centimeters during the Chilean quake, days would have shortened by 1.26 microseconds, Gross calculated.

A microsecond is one-millionth of a second, so no need to adjust watches just yet.

The Chilean quake shifted the Earth's axis by even more than the 9.1-magnitude temblor off Indonesia that set off the deadly tsunami in Asia in 2004, Gross worked out.

That's partly because the faultline responsible for the earthquake in Chile "dips into Earth at a slightly steeper angle than does the fault responsible for the 2004 Sumatran earthquake" and is more effective at moving Earth's mass vertically and shifting the planet's axis.

The 2004 quake in Asia caused the Earth to move by around seven centimeters and chopped an estimated 6.8 microseconds off the length of a day, NASA said.

The following guidelines are to be adhered to in the use of scientific calculators in national examinations.

(a) The calculator must be silent, with a visual display only.

(b) The working condition of the calculator is the responsibility of the pupil and a fault in a calculator cannot be used as a reason for seeking special consideration for the user.

(c) Calculators must not be borrowed from other pupils in the course of the examination for any reason.

(d) External storage media, e.g. card, tape, and plug-in modules, must not be in the possession of pupils during the examination.

(e) No unauthorised materials, e.g. instructions leaflets, formulae printed on the lid or cover of a calculator or similar materials, must be in the possession of pupils during the examination (where the instructions cannot be removed they should be securely covered).

(f) No programmable calculators are allowed.

(g) No calculators with permanent features of a programmed kind are allowed, e.g. calculators
capable of numerical integration, numerical differentiation, and/or expressing in irrational number form.

(h) No calculators with special communication features are allowed, e.g. calculators with the capability of remote communication via infra-red or blue-tooth with other machines.

(i) No calculators with capabilities for storing and displaying visual and verbal information are allowed.

Supermarket trolleys slam into people

She saw a train of trolleys snaking down towards her on the travellator.Trapped, with nowhere to run, she was so scared she even wondered if she would see her two daughters again.

It happened when Mrs Cecilia Ng, 35, was shopping at Giant hypermarket in Tampines last Tuesday evening. She was mid-way up on the travellator with her husband, Mr Terence Ng, when they suddenly saw more than 10 trolleys rolling towards them. It happened after some miscommunication between trolley collectors.
She said: 'People started to scream and shout. We tried to move out of the way but we were blocked by people behind us.'
Other shoppers managed to avoid the trolleys but the Ngs were not so lucky. Amid the commotion, Mrs Ng saw an 89-year-old woman with a walking stick behind her. She grabbed hold of the first trolley in a bid to save the old woman. But the trolleys were too heavy for her and knocked down the old woman, said Mrs Ng: 'I was so worried for her.
Luckily, she didn't hit her head but her finger was cut and bleeding.
'Luckily, the trolleys stopped moving when the travellator was stopped. The ordeal lasted under one minute, she said.
The couple, who are in the publishing business, have two daughters aged 5 and 2. She claimed no one came to help them until her husband went to look for the hypermarket's manager. But Giant said its staff gave immediate assistance to the victims. Mrs Ng had bruises and abrasions on her leg. She said the accident also triggered a relapse of her back problem from an old injury. Her husband suffered abrasions on his shoulders and back. The couple and other victims were taken to hospital for treatment.
A Giant staff member went to their Pasir Ris flat the next day to apologise and to find out more about the accident, they said.
Mrs Ng said she couldn't sleep for three nights after the accident, which kept playing back in her mind. Mrs Ng, who shops at Giant every week, said: 'I have a phobia of that place now and I don't think I will go back any time soon. And even we do, we'll be taking the lift.
'Mr Ng questioned the safety procedures in handling trolleys. 'Should these trolleys be sharing the same travellator with shoppers? 'Retiree Richard Chew, 63, said his family were also reluctant to visit the hypermarket after his 89-year-old mother, wife, grandson and maid suffered minor injuries. 'I am grateful they were not seriously injured,' he said.

Do you like to draw? Or is interested in designing a secondary 3 camp tee? Here's your chance! All you have to do is to draw out your idea on a paper that is not bigger than A3 size and use less than 3 colours (excluding black) on it. Then submit it to Mr Halim. It will be very cool if all the sec3s are wearing the tee that you designed! (it is not compulsory)
